The Guide
Which Waiheke Wine Tour, and How the Day Works
A guided day of tastings from the ferry wharf, a food and wine tour, or the hop-on hop-off bus on your own. Here is how they differ, what the ferry adds, and what you pay.
A Waiheke wine tour is a guided day on Waiheke Island, about 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland: a guide meets you off the ferry at Matiatia wharf, drives you to three or four vineyards for tastings, stops for lunch and brings you back for the boat home. On almost every tour the ferry is extra. The one we would book first is Waiheke Wine Tours’ day with lunch: tastings at three vineyards in the Onetangi Valley and lunch at 372 on the Onetangi beachfront with a glass of wine, 5 hours from 11:00, rated 4.8 from 609 reviews and from US$163 a person (checked October 2026).

Guided, food and wine, or on your own?
A guided wine tour takes the logistics away: the guide meets you at Matiatia, the tastings are booked, and someone else drives. They run about 5 to 6 hours. The cheaper ones leave lunch at your own cost; the dearer ones include lunch with a glass of wine.
A food and wine tour adds tastings that are not wine. Ananda Tours’ gourmet day starts with Te Matuku Bay oysters (when in season) at Kennedy Point Vineyard, tastes olive oil at Allpress, has a tapas lunch at Casita Miro and ends with beer, gin and whisky at The Heke.
On your own, Fullers360’s ferry and hop-on hop-off bus ticket gets you around a loop of 16 stops, Mudbrick, Cable Bay, Stonyridge and Batch among them, and you pay for each tasting at the cellar door.

How the day works
Most tours start at Matiatia, the ferry wharf at the island’s west end. Waiheke Wine Tours asks you to be on the island by 10:50 for its 11:00 start, and its guide meets you at the taxi stand by the terminal. The Wine Tasting Company and Ananda Tours ask for the 9:00 or 10:00 ferry from Auckland. A tasting stop runs about 40 minutes to an hour on the listings, and lunch about an hour to an hour and a half.
Take the earlier ferry. In the reviews of the three-vineyard tour, two guests, in December 2025 and October 2026, wrote that the day started late or felt rushed because other guests came on a later boat. The ferry and the tours lists which sailing each tour wants.
Every guided wine tour here is for adults 18 and over, and you may be asked for photo ID: New Zealand’s legal purchase age for alcohol is 18 under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, and venues may ask for a passport, New Zealand driver licence or Kiwi Access card (New Zealand Police). Fullers360’s Taste of Waiheke also takes 16 and 17-year-olds with a parent or guardian, at the adult price.
The ferry
Fullers360 sails from the Downtown Ferry Terminal, Piers 11 and 12, to Matiatia in about 40 to 45 minutes. A standard walk-up return is NZ$65 for an adult and NZ$29 for a child of 5 to 15, on Fullers360’s fares (October 2026); Fullers’ NZ$48.50 off-peak return only applies when you leave Auckland from 1pm and Waiheke from 7pm, bought a day ahead, so it does not fit a morning tour. On GetYourGuide, Fullers’ return ferry ticket is from US$37, and its ferry and hop-on hop-off bus ticket from US$59 (checked October 2026).
Tasting on your own
If you would rather choose the vineyards, the cellar doors sell tastings by the flight. The Waiheke Winegrowers’ Association counts about 30 growers on 216 hectares and profiles 25 member vineyards; Waiheke Island Tourism lists 15 cellar doors and tasting rooms, many with full restaurants. Stonyridge’s Signature Tasting is NZ$35 for four island wines (book ahead to be sure; walk-ins when there is space), Tantalus’s Estate Tasting is NZ$25 for four wines, and Mudbrick’s tastings run from NZ$22 to NZ$31 with no booking needed for groups under seven (each vineyard’s own site, October 2026). Waiheke wine tasting prices lists them all, and the best Waiheke vineyards says which tours stop where.
Do not plan to drive between tastings. New Zealand’s limit for drivers aged 20 and over is 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, and for drivers under 20 it is zero (NZ Transport Agency). Wine tour or hop-on hop-off compares the ways round the island that need no driver.
A night on Waiheke
The last ferries leave late: Fullers’ listing gives 00:30 from Waiheke on weekdays and Saturdays and 23:00 on Sundays and public holidays (October 2026). If you would rather not race the boat, Oneroa village is a short walk from the wharf.
For another day out of Auckland, tawharanuikiwitour.com is an independent guide to the kiwi tours at Tawharanui, north of the city.

Cellar door tasting prices from Mudbrick, Stonyridge and Tantalus’s own sites, the vineyard and grower counts from the Waiheke Winegrowers’ Association, and the cellar door list from Waiheke Island Tourism, October 2026. Waiheke Wine Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before a wine day on Waiheke Island, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
From about US$104 to US$202 a person on GetYourGuide (October 2026), and most prices do not include the ferry. The cheapest guided days, Enjoi's four wineries and Waiheke Wine Tours' three-vineyard tour, leave lunch at your own cost. Tours from about US$143 include lunch, most of them with a glass of wine. A return walk-up ferry from Auckland is NZ$65 for an adult on Fullers360's fares (October 2026). Waiheke wine tour prices sets them side by side.
Most do not: the guide meets you at Matiatia wharf on the island, and you buy your own ferry from Auckland. Fullers360's Taste of Waiheke day includes the return walk-up ferry, and so does its ferry and hop-on hop-off bus ticket. Every other tour on this site lists the ferry as extra. The ferry and the tours explains which sailing to catch.
About 40 to 45 minutes from the Downtown Ferry Terminal to Matiatia, on Fullers360's figures. Sailings via Devonport take about 10 minutes longer. Fullers' listing gives departures from Auckland from 6:00 to 23:45 on weekdays (October 2026), every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the time of day.
A guided tour if you want the tastings booked, the driving done and someone to explain the wines; the hop-on hop-off bus if you want to pick your own vineyards and pay as you go. Fullers360's Western Explorer bus loops 16 stops in about 80 minutes, including Mudbrick, Cable Bay, Stonyridge and Batch, but tastings are paid at each cellar door. Wine tour or hop-on hop-off works through the trade-off.
About NZ$22 to NZ$35 for a standard tasting at the cellar doors we checked in October 2026, more for a premium flight. Mudbrick lists tastings from NZ$22 to NZ$31, Stonyridge NZ$35 for four island wines, and Tantalus NZ$25 for four estate wines. Waiheke wine tasting prices has the full list.
Only under the legal limit, and the safer plan is not to drive at all. New Zealand's limit for drivers aged 20 and over is 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath or 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood; for drivers under 20 it is zero (NZ Transport Agency). A guided tour or the hop-on hop-off bus takes the question away.
18 on every wine tour listed here; Fullers360's Taste of Waiheke also takes 16 and 17-year-olds with a parent or guardian, at the adult price. New Zealand's legal purchase age for alcohol is 18 under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, and venues may ask for a passport, New Zealand driver licence or Kiwi Access card (New Zealand Police). Bring one.
Yes: most guides can drop you in Oneroa village instead of the wharf, and ferries run into the evening. Fullers' listing gives the last weekday sailing from Waiheke at 00:30 and the last on Sundays and public holidays at 23:00 (October 2026). Check the timetable for your date before you plan dinner.
Take a sailing earlier than the start strictly needs: tours wait for latecomers or start without them, and both shorten your day. Two guests on the three-vineyard tour, in December 2025 and October 2026, wrote that the day ran late or rushed because other guests came on a later ferry. Waiheke Wine Tours asks you to be on the island by 10:50 for its 11:00 start.
